Freedom of the Hills

Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills from Reggie's Place
When a friend and I first started sporting the interest in climbing- a friend, well more of a mentor, asked us if we had the climber's bible. When we asked what it was, he said, "Freedom of the Hills, a must have for the mountain enthusiast." In any case, he knew by the look on our novice uncertain facial expressions that we had absolutely no idea what he was talking about... He left the scene, and with what seemed like minutes later he returned with a well worn copy of Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills. He handed us the copy- "It's all yours." And with that move our climbing knowledge exponentially grew.

This book has everything you need to know about that grand journey up a mountain, a face, down a saddle, or when you find yourself at the bottom of a crevasse- It is your guide in literature form. My advice to anyone interested in the adventures beyond the porch: buy this book, steal this book, or commandeer it (if you catch my drift).

New or Used

When I started climbing, I was luckily steered in the right direction. "BUY USED SHOES before you buy new ones," I was told. - Why, you might ask?  First of all, I was not at all sure what kind of shoes I wanted or needed. I would probably have gone with the most aggressive shoe I could buy (an ego buy). Second reason, if you are like some people I know, your new sport endeavor could last all of one day before being pushed aside for another sport (nothing wrong with this either)...

I bought a pair of used lace-up beginners/indoor non-technicals for about 25$ from a second hand sporting store and began my pursuit my freshman year of college...I slowly began to learn what I liked, what I would need (but more importantly: why I would need it).

No Slippers- too loose.
Velcro would be nice- I'm always moving around to new spots.
Rubber- What types of climbs/rocks have I been climbing (nothing too aggressive, rarely cracks)
...and narrow my search from there...

The point I am trying to make is... sometimes USED GEAR is the way to go! -a small investment early on can point you in the right direction...

These shoes we have posted (Women's Vapor V Climbing Shoes) seem to have been used rarely if not a few times and are for sale at nearly half the price. I am not saying go buy these shoes necessarily as much as I am saying be a smart shopper...

Ok, done.

Warm Fleece

Favorite fleece of all time:
Patagonia Men's Classic Retro-X Jacket

Plain and simple- this fleece is awesome!
I have had my fleece for five years now. It has been all over the world and still going strong. Burly, always warm, and has excellent wind blocking technology. I would recommend this fleece as my personal choice to anyone, not just the outdoor enthusiast who is headed for somewhere like Siberia or hitting up a climb in the Tetons, but for the common folk, the city folk- it is really multipurpose and useful anywhere the cold is...

Here are the specs:
  • Fabric: 7.5-oz Synchilla® 100% polyester (86% recycled) ¼ in - pile
  • Lining: 100% polyester brushed mesh with a breathable/windproof barrier
  • Trim: 100% Supplex® nylon
  • Breathable/windproof membrane that's bonded between the recycled-polyester fleece exterior and moisture-wicking, brushed-polyester mesh lining

The Back Buddy- No Kidding.

I found a back buddy...in a box ...hmm

Interesting enough I said to myself, "what is a back buddy?" And so I thought I might share what I have found. A back buddy is made by Eagle Creek and described in this way:  "This lumbar pillow is great for long flights or long days sitting." oh, that answers it...it says to use it for sitting-

So I thought, huh, why not wear this lumbar support every where I go- not just those places where you sit for long periods of time- but use it ALWAYS!  Now I just wear this thing around the office- and whenever I feel like sitting- I know I have the lumbar support I need right there on my back. Plus if there is ever a flood, I should survive, as this thing of full of air and attached to my body. Nice. I hope there is flood just through our office- so I can say "check it out! Koo Koo Ka Choo- You guys swimming should have bought a back buddy!"

TRAIL RUNNING

The day is beautiful. Sunny but cool. A slight breeze.

Rained yesterday. Hopefully the trail dries. Today work may have to be shortened. The trail is calling.

Rocks, Dirt, Mud, and Grime will fear me today. I will conquer you single track. You will eat my sole.

Questions...

On a daily basis the Inbox reads that we have messages, with a spectrum of customers asking about the products we have listed. And though we established the Reggie's Place rating scale which we have linked to each of our listings...there are areas customers sometimes ask (usually dimension or size related). Also, we of course do miss the occasional detail which should have mentioned in the listing.

And though it may not be wise to "poke fun" at some of the customers we have...this seems extraordinary...and funny for all to see...

Question received today, "Can u pls aible to lower the price"

That is it. We are not even sure how to answer that. I think the answer is maybe, but not entirely sure. I really do wonder what the acronym "PLS" is. I think this would be the key to answering this question. Then there is the "aible" which I think was really "table" misspelled. And then the "u" which I assume was a clearing of the throat, much better spelled as uh, or huh, or even as an ellipsis...that would work.   So if the question is about a throat clearing table price which can lower to different heights, I think the answer is, "we don't have those for sale here at Reggie's Place."

Returns

On occasion it can be quite entertaining to see the details on why a customer would return an item. Here at Reggie's Place, a customer was quoted of leaving these remarks on a return slip:

"Used 4 times during the 2011 season. Material and fit are fantastic but ultimately a lack of a pee-hole proved to be annoying when making use of the facility at ski resorts."

And so this item was returned. We are left with the reminder that sometimes gear needs an access hatch of some sort- for when the facilities call... I am reminded of the one piece pajama suit I wore as a kid, and picture every new ski bibs/pants in the future with such a Velcro hatch... I think people would love to be up at the resort and have the ability to open the back hatch (just like when I was a kid), and proceed to facilitate the activities of the facility- if you get my drift. What do you think? Is this the new and upcoming addition to ski pants of 2013!?

This is Reggie. He runs the show.

What is this Reggie's Place?

Our first post to the blog. Hmm. What to write about- ahh our goal... the goal of Reggie's Place should be known by our readers.

Our goal is to provide outdoor enthusiasts with amazing savings on gear and apparel for the next adventure.

It is that simple. We believe in enabling people to do the sports they love with quality gear at an affordable price. Why buy a brand spank'n new jacket at retail when you can buy one worn once by some guy, in some place,  who no longer has need for it?

We at Reggie's Place are in fact outdoor enthusiasts, and realize what it is like at that treasure hunt (the gear google search or mall-stop'n-shop), searching at the end of the supply chain. Without a map that treasure hunt can be awfully difficult. Hopefully, our readers learn that Reggie's Place has the trail plotted, the map lying out, so that the X marking the gear spot can be easily found! Well we could just also give you GPS coordinates or an RSS feed. hmm.

We also want to just keep in contact with our customers, have dialogue about the great outdoors, and talk about whatever comes our way here at Reggie's Place.   We hope to make a post everyday during the week, and we hope that our followers (when they come) will enjoy them.

So if this your first visit to Reggie's Place-

 Take a deep breath,

and yell YIIPPPPEEEE!

If you didn't yell it, you should. It just feels so good to yell YIIIPPPPEEE really loud- especially if you are at work. People may ask, "why did you just yell YIIPPEEE so loud at work? What's up?"  And you can answer, "I just found out about a place called Reggie's Place- not an ordinary online store, but in fact, a life saver, and adventure pusher, an online experience like no other, the place where dreams meet reality, where I can dream it, buy it, and do it! I was overcome with joy, mixed with the advice of Reggie's Place, and so I yelled YIIPPPEEEE!" That is what you should tell them.

So until tomorrow. Gear Up.
